Why these states

There is no national source for lake depth. It is published state by state, in inconsistent formats, and most states publish nothing you can legally pass on. All 47 mainland states were surveyed for this app. More land as they open up.

Only Massachusetts publishes a town with each lake. For the rest the position is how you tell two lakes of the same name apart, which in Michigan matters: 866 of its 2,177 lakes share a name with another one.
