Questions, and the things worth knowing
If the answer is not here, email [contact address pending: set CONTACT in tools/landing/build_site.py] and you will get a reply from a person.
Which lakes are included
Every lake in the app is listed on the coverage page, searchable by name or town. All of them ship inside the download, so there is nothing to fetch when you arrive at the water.
Whether it works without a signal
Yes. The map, the depth readings, your saved spots and your catch records all work with the radio off. Connected features, when they arrive, are the part that needs a network.
Where the depth data comes from
State bathymetric surveys, published by each state's own agency and bundled at build time. Massachusetts contours come from MassWildlife, Washington's from the Department of Ecology, and so on. Full attribution is in the app under Data credits.
How accurate the depths are
They are survey data, and surveys have a date. Some are recent, some are decades old, and water levels move. Treat the contours as a guide to the shape of the bottom rather than a measurement of today's depth.
What it costs
The map, your marks and your catch log are free and stay free. If connected features arrive they may be paid, but nothing that works offline today moves behind a payment later.
Which phones it runs on
Android 8.0 and later. It is around 125 MB installed, because the lake data travels with the app instead of streaming. There is no iPhone version.
Before you rely on it
- It is not a navigation aid. Bathymetry is survey data of unknown vintage. Hazards, obstructions and water level are not mapped. Do not navigate by it.
- Fishing regulations. Size limits, bag limits and seasons vary by state and they change. The app never states them. Check your state's current regulations.
- It doesn't predict fish. No score, no forecast, no model guessing at your odds. It shows you the shape of the bottom and the record of what you caught. The rest is fishing.
